Decarbonising the gas grid – IChemE Young Industrialist Award winner 2019

“To be an IChemE Global Award winner feels a very large honour and a vindication of all the decisions I’ve made in my career so far.”

That’s how Chartered Chemical Engineer and Chartered Mechanical Engineer Thomas Isaac felt after being presented with the Young Industrialist Award at the IChemE Global Awards 2019.

Using his multidisciplinary skills to develop low carbon projects at Progressive Energy, he has had huge success with the company and played a key role in a team that achieved the UK’s first hydrogen exemption granted by the Health and Safety Executive allowing them to inject hydrogen in the gas grid above the regulatory limit in a bid to decarbonise it.

In developing the evidence base over time, this work in the HyDeploy Project could allow a hydrogen blend distributed across the UK gas network which could ultimately reduce carbon savings by as much as removing 2.5 million cards from the roads.

It was this work that saw him scoop the Young Industrialist trophy at the IChemE Global Awards.
