Chatting Chartered status and biosector careers with students at Frank Morton

Hundreds of chemical engineering students from across the UK and Ireland descended on central Birmingham this week for the annual Frank Morton Careers Fair.

It was a great chance for us to connect with so many of our Student Members at the event – this year hosted by the University of Birmingham.

Despite a chilly start to the morning (outside and indoors), the undergraduates burst through the door in huge waves.

Regardless of being in their first year or fourth year, it was clear across the board that the students were thinking ahead to their careers and professional development, with many even asking: “How do I become Chartered?”

Heather Williams, a founding member of our National Young Members Committee (NYMC), joined us on the IChemE stand. She explained how the group supports students and early career members by helping to facilitate relevant training and regional activities to help advance their careers.

And as a Process Engineer at WSP currently in process of becoming Chartered, it was really helpful for students to get some insights into her first-hand experience.

So we were delighted to chat to the students about the diverse careers available in the bio-sector and share with them our new resource: Chemical engineering careers in the bioeconomy: A selection of career profiles

These profiles follow on from the final report of the work undertaken in our BioFutures Programme. The report recognised that there is a clear need for chemical engineers to have a greater diversity of knowledge and skills to be able to make value contributions to solving these global issues.

A huge thank you to our members who have shared their stories with us. They are broken down into five sections: water, energy, food, health and wellbeing, and bioprocess design and manufacturing.

Each one of these career profiles demonstrates the impact made by chemical engineers across the breath of the bioeconomy.

We had a really great response from the students at the Frank Morton Careers Fair, many of whom were interested in exploring the idea of a career in the bioeconomy.

The careers fair precedes the Frank Morton Sports Day, an annual event for chemical engineering students from universities across the UK and Ireland to compete in a variety of sporting activities, each hoping to be crowned champions of undergraduate chemical engineering.

It was great to meet so many new undergraduates at the careers fair and catch up with some of the biggest recruiters for chemical engineering: BOC Linde, Pfizer, TOTAL, Phillips66, Wood and GSK.
